EU Responds to Trump: U.S. 30% Tariff Harms Both Sides, Will Continue Efforts for Agreement

On Saturday, U.S. President Trump published a letter to the EU on the social platform Truth Social, announcing that from August 1, the U.S. would impose a 30% tariff on EU goods entering the U.S. The EU responded that this move harms the interests of both parties and will continue to work towards an agreement.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated on Saturday that imposing a 30% tariff on EU exports to the U.S. would disrupt crucial supply chains across the Atlantic, affecting businesses, consumers, and patients on both sides. She emphasized that globally, few economies can match the EU's level of openness and commitment to fair trade rules.

Von der Leyen mentioned that the EU has always been committed to resolving differences with the U.S. through negotiation and is ready to continue pursuing an agreement before August 1. At the same time, the EU will take all necessary measures to protect its interests, including possible countermeasures when needed.

In his letter, Trump stated the need for the U.S.-EU trade relationship to change, demanding that the EU provide the U.S. with full market access without imposing retaliatory tariffs. He remarked, “Unfortunately, our relationship is far from mutually beneficial.” Trump implied that if the EU raised tariffs, the U.S. would impose the same rate on top of the 30% tariff.

Recently, Trump has sent letters to over 20 world leaders, stating that new tariffs will be imposed on these countries starting August 1. In an interview with NBC News, he noted that he plans to apply a uniform tariff of 15% or 20% on most trade partners, insisting, “All remaining countries will face tariffs, whether it’s 20% or 15%. We are currently examining this.”
