Severe Rainfall Hits Busan, South Korea, Raising Fears of Sinkholes

South Korea has recently experienced heavy rainfall, with over 200 millimeters recorded in Gyeongsangnam-do, and serious flooding reported in the Busan area, especially at railway construction sites, heightening residents' fears of sinkholes. Experts point to extreme weather and poor underground construction as the primary causes of these sinkholes.

This weekend's downpour led to the inundation of an underground electrical room in a building in Miryang, prompting emergency drainage operations by firefighters. In the city of Geoje, a record 236.6 mm of rainfall was observed, leading to multiple road closures and vehicles overturning.

Sinkholes pose a significant threat to public safety, with over a thousand incidents reported in the last decade in South Korea, with an average of 173 occurrences per year. Experts state that the primary causes of these sinkholes are linked to groundwater flow and improper engineering practices, with extreme weather exacerbating the issue.

Recent climate changes, including heavy rains and unusually low temperatures, have also impacted soil stability, increasing the risk of sinkholes.
