Anti-Motion Against Nantou Councilor Chen Yuling Fails as Vote Does Not Reach 1/4 Threshold

The recall motion against Nantou County Councilor Chen Yuling was voted on today (13th). According to the Central Election Commission, the number of votes supporting the recall was 12,160, while those opposing it amounted to 5,867. Since the supporting votes did not exceed one-fourth of the total number of voters in the electoral district, the motion was denied. Chen is barred from proposing another recall during her current term.
Chen expressed her gratitude for the trust from the community and committed to introspecting on any shortcomings and ensuring she works hard to improve the local situation. Nantou County Mayor Hsu Shu-hua noted that the number of agreement votes was significantly larger than disagreement votes, showing that the public hopes for a comprehensive review by the government.
This recall case is the first to reach the voting stage in Taiwan’s history and is the only recall effort against a DPP member in this wave of mass recalls. Voter turnout was recorded at 31.76%, with valid votes totaling 18,027. Among these, the supporting votes accounted for 67.45%, with opposing votes at 32.55%. This result reflects the electorate’s desire for improvement in the political environment.
