Couple's Smoking in Airplane Toilet Leads to Emergency Landing in U.S. for 17 Hours

On July 8, a flight from Cancun, Mexico, to London, UK, was forced to make an emergency landing in Maine, USA, due to a couple smoking in the airplane toilet, resulting in a 17-hour delay. Passengers described the conditions as resembling a 'temporary shelter.'
According to reports, British passenger Terry Lawrance recounted that about an hour into the flight, the crew announced that two passengers were smoking on board and warned that the plane would divert if it continued. After approximately three hours of flying, the plane entered Canadian airspace before quickly changing course toward Maine.
The flight landed around 9:30 PM local time, and the two smoking passengers were removed from the aircraft. Lawrance noted that they appeared to be intoxicated and engaged in a verbal altercation. Initially, crew members informed passengers that they would be able to take off again shortly, but soon announced everyone would have to disembark due to crew exceeding legal working hours.
Subsequently, the airline arranged for another aircraft to be dispatched from the UK to the U.S. Lawrance indicated that passengers were left waiting in harsh conditions in Maine, sleeping on makeshift beds, with all luggage still on the plane and receiving their first drink only after about six hours. By the following afternoon, the stranded passengers were finally able to continue their journey to London.
