Tokyo Faces Heavy Rain: Shibuya JR Station Flooded and Shinkansen Suspended

The Kanto region of Japan has experienced record-breaking heavy rain, leading to severe flooding in Tokyo. Water inundated the JR Shibuya Station, causing a temporary suspension of Shinkansen services. Gunma Prefecture issued six consecutive heavy rain alerts, highlighting the abnormal intensity of the rainfall. Meanwhile, the Shinmoedake volcano in Kyushu continues to erupt, affecting local agricultural water supplies and resulting in a wave of cancellations at hotels.

Last night, sudden heavy rain hit Tokyo, resulting in multiple areas being severely flooded. Many citizens were caught off guard, as the weather was clear in the morning. One resident reported a stream forming in front of their house, making it impossible to return home. The Tōkai Shinkansen was temporarily suspended on some sections due to the heavy rain, with passengers waiting approximately 40 minutes inside the train.

Gunma Prefecture also saw heavy rainfall affecting vehicles struggling to move through the water. A truck was trapped in an underground passage and nearly submerged. The president of the local water management association noted that rainwater mixed with mud could pose greater risks if more rain follows.
