Kiu Chui-Cheng Meets UK MP Gavin Williamson, Thanks for Supporting Democratic Taiwan

Kiu Chui-Cheng, the chairperson of the Mainland Affairs Council, recently met with UK MP Gavin Williamson, where both sides exchanged views on the cross-strait and regional situations. Kiu expressed gratitude for Williamson's past focus on Indo-Pacific security during his term as UK's Defense Minister, alongside his consistent support for Taiwan.

In his visit to Taiwan for the forum, Williamson publicly mentioned his order for the UK Royal Navy vessels to transit through the Taiwan Strait while he was Defence Minister. Although this action drew protests from Beijing, it was a concrete action supporting Taiwan. Williamson stated that after 17 years, he witnessed Taiwan's growth in various aspects and its increasingly important role in the global situation.

Kiu pointed out that the cross-strait relations are complex, sensitive, and critical, affecting the survival of the Taiwanese people and Taiwan's future development, while peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are indispensable for global security and prosperity. He emphasized that the government's commitment to maintaining the status quo of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait has not changed, and he hopes that dialogue can proceed based on mutual respect and dignity without preconditions.

Kiu highlighted the ideal of peace but also urged not to be delusional. In the face of the multifaceted threats and challenges from the Chinese Communist Party, the government will fully implement the 'Four Pillars of Peace Action Plan' proposed by President Lai, reinforcing economic, social, and security resilience, and deepening cooperation with like-minded countries such as the UK to jointly safeguard universal values like democracy, freedom, human rights, and the rule of law.
