Silicon Valley's AI Talent Wars: A Battle Among Chinese at Meta

Silicon Valley's AI Talent Wars: A Battle Among Chinese at Meta

The AI competition between the U.S. and China has turned into a rivalry among Chinese individuals. NVIDIA's Jensen Huang has claimed that 50% of global AI researchers hail from China. Recently, Meta has launched a talent acquisition spree in Silicon Valley, with two-thirds of its new hires for the "Super Intelligence Laboratory" coming from Chinese universities, including Apple's AI model team leader, Wang Ruoming, who was lured with a staggering $200 million salary.

Chinese companies might not be able to match U.S. salaries (DeepSeek's highest salary for this year is roughly NTD 6.2 million), but they have found other ways to retain talent. A recent report revealed that DeepSeek employees faced outbound travel restrictions imposed by authorities, requiring them to submit their passports and seek regulatory oversight. Additionally, these companies appeal to patriotism, urging overseas Chinese talents to return and contribute to AI development, promising that they will be "remembered in history".

The latest "downgraded version" of NVIDIA's AI chips has also surfaced. The company's market capitalization reached over $4 trillion on Wednesday, setting a new global record. However, more attention is being drawn to Jensen Huang's upcoming third visit to Beijing. According to the Financial Times, he plans to attend the supply chain expo next week and has expressed a desire to meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
