Torrential Rain Hits Kanto Region, Record Rainfall Measured in Tokyo

On July 10, 2023, the Kanto region of Japan, including Tokyo, experienced severe torrential rain, with several areas recording unprecedented rainfall amounts.
Reports indicate that the Meguro and Setagaya wards in Tokyo and Yokohama City in Kanagawa Prefecture observed record rainfalls, prompting authorities to issue flood warnings for the Meguro area.
Owing to the influence of weather fronts, unstable atmospheric conditions stretched from the Tohoku region down to Kyushu, leading to the issuance of "record short-term heavy rain alerts" starting in the evening for the Kanto and Koshin'etsu regions, reminding the public to be alert for potential flooding in low-lying areas, river overflowing, and landslides.
Tokyo and the neighboring prefectures of Kanagawa, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Chiba, and Saitama are expected to face heavy rain risk through the night. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, as of 7 PM local time, the rainfall in the Suginami ward of Tokyo reached 120 millimeters, while both Meguro and Setagaya wards recorded 100 millimeters, breaking local records.
In addition, the hourly rainfall in Honjo City, Saitama Prefecture, exceeded 120 millimeters, showcasing the intensity of the rain.
The water level of the Meguro River once exceeded warning levels, prompting both the Tokyo government and the Japan Meteorological Agency to issue warnings, which were lifted at 8:45 PM local time.
