Keelung Man Faces Divorce After Vietnamese Wife Goes Missing for Two Years

A man from Keelung, known as A-Luo (a pseudonym), joyfully married his Vietnamese wife, A-Miao (a pseudonym), in early 2023, completing their marriage registration in Taiwan on February 8, 2023. However, just four days after arriving in Taiwan, A-Miao claimed she needed to use the restroom, and has since vanished without a trace. After two long years without contact, A-Luo reluctantly filed for divorce in court.

A-Luo recounted that after briefly living together post-wedding, his wife disappeared without explanation. He tried repeatedly to reach her by phone and sent messages through social media, ultimately reporting her disappearance to the police. However, A-Miao seemed to have completely vanished from existence.

During court hearings at the Keelung District Court, the judge determined that the marital relationship could not be maintained and granted the divorce. A-Luo testified that there had been no disputes between A-Miao and his family, and he remains unaware of his wife's whereabouts.

The court ruled that this case met the criteria for a "serious reason making it difficult to maintain the marriage" as stipulated in Article 1052 of the Civil Code, and that the circumstances were not caused by A-Luo.
