Thailand's Cultural Soft Power Strategy: The Rise and Impact of GL Dramas

Thailand's Cultural Soft Power Strategy: The Rise and Impact of GL Dramas

Since 2022, Thai GL dramas, which depict emotional relationships between women, have rapidly gained popularity across Asia and even in the West. Associate Professor Hung Ming-Chien from the Taiwan Southeast Asian Research Group points out that the Thai government has designated this as a soft power export, emphasizing that the LGBTQ industry can significantly boost the Thai economy.

This trend has resonated strongly with Taiwanese audiences, particularly among youth, serving as an important window for many to explore gender and emotional identities. Fan Li Chia-Ling stated, "In the past, everyone kept to themselves and rarely discussed their orientation or came out. Now there is a medium that allows people to connect and understand each other's situations. You're not alone anymore."

Dr. Lee Cheuk-Yin, a media and cultural studies associate professor at Lancaster University in the UK, analyzed that "At some of the Thai yuri CP fan meetings, the number of women attending may actually exceed that of LGBTQ pride parades, as those parades often focus on identity politics, while many may not feel comfortable to come out. In fan meetings, it's a safer and more inclusive space."

In contrast, despite the legalization of same-sex marriage in Taiwan and an increasing focus on gender issues, local GL dramas still face challenges from both market size and societal perceptions. Screenwriter Chang Jun-Han believes that "Taiwan needs to carve its own path by producing stories that focus on relationships, family dynamics, and social issues, incorporating audience voices, as they enjoy lighthearted and positive content."

If future collaborations can draw on diverse themes, it would inject more vitality and imaginative space into LGBTQ culture across Asia and worldwide.
