Peru Invests $3.5 Billion in 24 Swedish Gripen Fighter Jets

According to the military news website 'Army Recognition,' the Peruvian government has announced plans to procure 24 JAS-39E 'Gripen' fighter jets from Sweden's 'Saab' to enhance the modernization of its air force. This move will make Peru the third Latin American country to operate this type of aircraft, following Brazil and Colombia.

The report indicates that the contract is expected to be finalized on the 10th during Swedish Defense Minister Johansson's visit to the Peruvian capital, Lima. In addition to the 24 JAS-39E jets, the deal includes related investment plans and technology transfer agreements, with a total estimated value of $3.5 billion. The procurement will be executed in two phases: the first phase of $2 billion will be included in the 2025 national budget, while the second phase of $1.5 billion is set for 2026.

During his visit, Johansson is expected to discuss details regarding the production location and logistics support with Peruvian Defense Minister Chavez. While 'Saab' has confirmed that it will not send representatives to this intergovernmental meeting, it is believed that they will showcase two JAS-39E jets provided by the Brazilian Air Force.

The Peruvian Defense Ministry announced the procurement plan for the 24 new aircraft in October 2024, aiming to retire older aircraft and modernize its air force. The current fleet includes the 'Mirage 2000' that have been in service since 1986-1987, MiG-29s purchased from Belarus in 1998, as well as Su-25 fighters and A-37 twin-engine light attack aircraft.

Analysis indicates that the JAS-39E's competitive pricing, shorter delivery time, and low maintenance costs made it appealing to the Peruvian Air Force, successfully outcompeting rivals like Lockheed Martin's F-16 Blk70 and Dassault's Rafale F4.
