Savoring an Iced Coffee Under the Sun at Kuching’s Old Courthouse

Kuching, Malaysia is a city where time seems to move slowly. Wandering through its old streets, one can see an intersection of ancient architecture and tropical greenery, where history and modernity coexist. In the cultural heart of this city lies a place filled with stories—the Commons café, nestled within the Old Courthouse Cultural Precinct. Here, enjoying a cup of coffee becomes not just a beverage choice but a narrative experience steeped in history.
The building housing Commons can be traced back to the British colonial period when it served as the Supreme Court of Sarawak, representing the core of the judicial system established by the White Rajahs of Borneo. This structure, with its white walls, arched columns, and sloped roofs, marries English classical design with local materials, capturing the essence of colonial style. As time has passed, this symbol of order and authority underwent renovation and rebirth in 2003, transforming into the Old Courthouse Cultural Precinct, now a vibrant hub for creative arts including exhibitions, markets, and cultural events.
Walking into Commons, the interior decor merges tropical aesthetics with contemporary design, featuring rattan furniture and wooden tables that feel light yet warm. Tropical plants and flowers are thoughtfully arranged throughout, invoking the ambiance of a glasshouse forest. The aroma of coffee fills the air, while an inviting dessert display captivates visitors. Although I had already eaten too much to indulge in sweets, I opted for an iced coffee, finding a serene spot by the window to appreciate the shifting dance of light and shadow.
Outside, on a wooden platform overlooking the courtyard, I found two chairs and a small drum table facing the greenery. The ceiling overhead is adorned with arched beams, and the gentle breeze carries the sounds of water and wind chimes, creating a moment where urban clamor fades away, and time slows down. My experience at Commons taught me that historical buildings can be more than mere spectacles; they can also serve as vessels for everyday life. During your visit to Kuching, spare an afternoon at this old courthouse to enjoy a warm cup of coffee, quietly coexisting with the city’s past.
